Culture in the Sustainable Development Goals: The Role of the European Union

What is the role of the EU in reaching the culture goals of Agenda 2030?

Wrote by Former MEP Gijs de Vries, the study takes stock of the European Union’s progress in reaching the cultural goals of Agenda 2030. Agenda 2030 is the ambitious agenda for sustainable development developed by the United Nations. The agenda includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and culture is part of these objectives.

The study explores how EU policies contribute to meeting the SDGs and what are the challenges. Coordination and collaboration need to be further improved, including between the EU and national capitals. The present EU budget does not reflect culture’s importance to society or the EU’s ambitions.
